Happy Birthday

Tomorrow is my Birthday

The years accumulate like grains of salt

Each one has its own zing and texture

When mixed together, impossible to sort out

Like the salt in the ocean, flowing freely

Waves hit the beach, celebrating the blessings of aging

A gift not given to all, not to be taken for granted

I hear my song playing in the snow covered hills beyond

“Even children get older, and I’m getting older too.” (Fleetwood Mac)

Last April, I received the ultimate birthday gift

My redheaded jolly rancher grandson

With smiles the size of Texas, he giggles

He is the candle on my cake, my April in Paris

My birthday extravaganza

  1. I hope you had a glorious birthday! I particularly like the comparison of years to grains with their own “zing and texture” – so true- and to salt in the ocean. Implies continuity, the ebb and flow of life. And CONGRATULATIONS on your best, redheaded gift!!
